Shugakuin Rikyu Imperial Villa was built by the retired Emperor Gomizunoh as a villa for Retired Emperors. After Emperor Gomizunoh resigned his position, he moved into Sento Gosho Imperial Palace as a Retired Emperor. The present Shugakuin Rikyu Imperial Villa has 545,000 squares meters of land including the Upper, Middle, and Lower Villas, with rice fields and mountains.
