Sumiya is the surviving masterpiece of Ageya architectural styles in Shimabara where a traditional entertainment district of the highest rank in Kyoto was. It was expanded to about its present scale in 1787. Ageya was an elegant banquet house where were held dinner party and entertainment accompanied with Geisha and Tayu (a Geisha of the highest rank who has high education for traditional culture). They performed tea ceremonies, sang and danced there. Sumiya was designated an Important Cultural Property in 1952, and become the museum.
