Mitarashi Ritual

下鴨神社みたらし祭り

The Mitarashi Ritual is held at Shimogamo-jinja shrine, UNESCO World Heritage, early in the morning to 22:00 about July 23 to July 31. This Shinto ritual, also called “Ashi-tsuki Shinji”, has become one of the most popular summer events in Kyoto, where people come to pray for good health every year. People walk knee-deep in the spring water of ”Mitarai Pond” to the ”Mitarai Shrine” enshrined at the back of the pond with lighted candle, purge sins and debris and pray for good health. The water is cool and comfortable even in the middle of summer, so it is a summer ritual.
