Okera Mairi

白朮(おけら)参り

Okera Mairi is an annual Shinto ritual in Yasaka-jinja shrine to visit there and receive the award of a fire rope called “Okera-bi” from 19:00 of December 31 to predawn morning on January 1. Okera is a sort of Asteraceae family, and it is said that it will ward off evil spirit if you get smoked of Okera. Visitors have carried a rope to receive the fire from the lanterns hanging on both sides of the main shrine building which are burned Okera in, taken it back to their homes to keep the fire burning and cooked “Zouni” which is traditionally eaten on the morning of January 1. It is said that you will be strong and healthy throughout the year without contracting any epidemic diseases if you eat “Zoni” cooked by fire of “Okera” .
