Toll Joya-no-Kane

除夜の鐘つき

Joya-no-Kane is a temple bell tolling ceremony on New Year’s Eve (December 31). The temple bells are tolled 108 times between 23:30 on December 31 and midnight on January 1 at the temples all over Japan. Chion-in temple, Chion-ji temple, Kiyomizu-dera temple and Eikan-do Zenrin-ji temple are the most famous in Kyoto. Some of those temples allow visitors to tolled the bell on a first-come first-served basis. The number 108 is said to represent the number of human’s spirit of evil thought.
