Plum Blossom Festival at Kitano-Tenmangu shrine

北野天満宮梅花祭

The 25th of every month is an annual festival of Kitano-Tenmangu shrine known as day of “Tenjin-san”. It originates from June 25 as the birthday of Sugawara Michizane who is enshrined as “Tenjin” and from February 25th as the day of his passing. The streets are lined with a lot of open-air booths from 6:00 in the morning to about 21:00 at night on that day, the precincts of the shrine are lit up after sunset and crowded with worshippers whole day. Baika-sai, Plum Blossom Festival, is an event held on February 25. Beautifully dressed Maiko and Geiko (Geisha) of Kamishichiiken entertainment district perform a Nodate (outdoor tea ceremony) on the grounds of the shrine at the height of the plum blossom season.
